Use Lync Address book segregation

Today I want to share how we implement the Lync Address book segregation function in Lync 2010. In our organization where we need to separate several Organizations from seeing each other in the Lync Address book we had to find a solution.
We used several PowerShell commands to achieve this function. Our users are all in the same OU who needs to share the same address book.
We first import the AD PowerShell Module:
Import-Module ActiveDirectory
Then we sort out the OU where we need the OU GUID from.
$OU = "OU=Users,OU=Department,DC=Domain,DC=Corp"
$OUObject = Get-ADOrganizationalUnit -Identity $OU
$GUID = $OUObject.ObjectGUID

Forefront UAG Custom changes trough Registry

I had to edit time out for login page from the default 4 minutes to 15 minutes.
From TechNet there are some keys you cannot manage trough the console and only by registry. Find here all the registry keys.

I changed the values and did a iisreset. And it all worked as a charm.
One nasty thing what isn’t written that after a reboot the change has gone.
I was applying patches and had to restart after the installation. As I combined these changes together I decided to check the registry again, and my change was gone??

When you add the registry settings to the register, open the UAG console, Save the changes and then Activate them. Now when you reboot your server the changes remain in the registry!

Windows 8 Keyboard Shortcuts

I was installing first my tablet with the new version if Windows 8. Worked amazing.
All the swipes from left for the open programs, from down for settings in the application and from the right for the charms. Then I moved to my laptop, which still doesn’t facilitated with a touch screen. In Windows 7 I used to work a lot with shortcuts from the keyboard and after I installed Windows 8 it affected my experience directly. I was looking for shortcuts to enter a situation directly, and not first move my mouse the the right, waiting for the charms and hit settings for example. Lets take a look how Microsoft has created nice keyboard shortcuts for these functions, some of them we know from earlier versions of Windows:

Apple can’t connect to Youtube behind TMG

I run a TMG 2010 at home as my reverse proxy for Lync and Exchange lab. But internal I had some complains from Apple Iphone / Ipad users including myself I couldn’t stream Youtube Sad smile
Found out that Apple Youtube app doesn’t like the forward proxy in TMG…
But how to resolve it? I know, you want to have a proxy for monitoring, scanning etc. But for me at home and maybe in some office scenario’s this might help to allow iPad and iPhone users to stream their video’s.
In the TMG console in the Web Access group I created a new rule:
Give the new rule a appropriate name and hit next:

Call Park in Lync

Let’s talk today about call park and it's functionality.
Have you ever been on the phone and being in a crowded office space? You’d wish you could transfer the call to a meeting room where it is quiet. Couple of questions flashing my mind; What meeting room is available, if I transfer the call who might pick it up?

Or you want to transfer it to a group of other people but you don’t know who is available yet? So you first have to chat around to see who is available and then transfer the call. What if you just could chat to your sales group:
“Huge order in pipe line, pick it up at *801!!” and leave the chat. Open-mouthed smile

Call park offers this functionality. You place the call in the parking lot and there it waits for someone to pick it up with a virtual extension that is assinged to the call.

Hard Reset Lync Phone Edition

I was playing around in my lab until suddenly my phone
keeps on rebooting. I don’t know what it was but I had to find out how can I reset this phone??

Lync phone edition you can reset in 2 ways:

1. Hard reset
The Hard Reset lets users delete all user-created data (such as device logs, registry settings, and credentials).

2. Factory reset
The factory reset lets users revert the device back to the last working software version, in the event that the phone is updated to a version that is problematic and causing issues for the users.

Lync Web Scheduler

Lync Webscheduler is a web based tool for managing you online meetings. It provides the following features:
  • Scheduling a new online Lync meeting.
  • Listing all existing Lync Server 2010 meetings that the user has organized.
  • Viewing and modifying details of an existing meeting.
  • Deleting an existing meeting.
  • Sending an email invitation to meeting participants by using a configured SMTP mail server.
  • Joining an existing conference.
Compared to the Conferencing Add-In for Microsoft Outlook, Lync Web Scheduler has the following limitations:
  • Lync Web Scheduler does not support scheduling recurring meetings.
  • Lync Web Scheduler lists only meetings that were organized by the user. It does not list all meetings that the user is invited to. Further, meetings created using some other tool will not be editable using Lync Web Scheduler.
  • Lync Web Scheduler is available only in English.
  • Meeting invitations that are generated by Lync Web Scheduler do not look exactly the same as those that are generated by the Conferencing Add-In for Outlook.
  • Lync Web Scheduler doesn’t interact with the calendaring server. Calendar updates happen only via email invitations.

The “Red Phone” functionality in Lync

Some few people, usually executives, have in their office a normal desk phone and a “Red Phone”. The red phone has a number only Very Important People know about. What about this functionality in Lync? In Lync we have a option called “Private Line”. This is an additional telephone number you can assign to a person in Lync to facilitate an extra “Private” line. This private line by-passes all team delegates and rings directly to the person assigned with the private number.

How to enable the Private Line feature:

Exchange Server won’t startup (HUB & UM Role)

Today we had a interesting issue with a exchange server. It’s a Exchange 2010 server with the UM and Hub role collocated and after reboot the following error appeared:
  • Server wont start exchange services, and a error when login saying that winmail.exe failed and needed to close. after some other errors appeared but seems to be irrelevant in this case.
  • Forefront Client Security was corrupted.
We have the roles collocated for couple of years already but we think that a Windows update might be the source of our problems. Unfortunatly we cannot find out until Microsoft release a update to prevent this problem :-)
